Biography
Charlie is a sweet, beautiful boy. He was born in December of 2003-
due on Christmas Day but born 2 weeks early. He gave us a scare at about 20
months when he lost all of his language and began to appear classically
autistic, but with the help of many therapists he made wonderful progress. He
still carries a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome.
In late July of 2007, he began to complain of headaches, then dizziness and
vertigo. The weekend before his diagnosis we noticed ataxia (stumbling when he
walked) and left-side weakness. He also complained on one occasion of double
vision. We took him to the pediatrician first thing Monday, who referred him to
a neurologist. We saw the neurologist first thing Tuesday, who admitted us from
the appointment. Later that morning, Charlie had an MRI which showed a golf-ball
sized tumor in his left cerebellum and hydrocephaly due to the tumor blocking
the cerbrospinal fluid from draining. We were transferred by ambulance to a
larger children's hospital and Charlie had brain surgery the next morning. They
were able to remove most of the tumor, but because it originated in his
brainstem they had to leave a portion.
We were in the hospital for almost three weeks, and since then he has had
several more MRIs and hundreds of therapy appointments: Physical Therapy,
Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy for the Central Auditory Processing
Disorder the tumor left him with. His MRI in February showed some growth of the
residual tumor. Luckily, Aprils's MRI is stable. He repeats his MRI in July. Any
more growth (which his neuro-oncologist thinks is likely) will mean more surgery
and/or chemotherapy.
